Every project, start to finish

Kitchens, vanities and built-ins we refinished in place. Where the camera stayed put, drag the handle to reveal the before.

Kitchen after painting: cabinets refinished in warm white with dark countertops Same kitchen before painting: golden oak cabinets with dark countertops Before After

Golden oak kitchen, painted warm white

Full kitchen refinish

The oak was in good shape, so nothing came out. We degreased, sanded, primed and sprayed the cabinets. The dark countertops stayed and now read as a deliberate contrast rather than the only dark thing fighting the wood.

Range wall after painting: cabinets refinished white above granite countertops Same range wall before painting: honey maple cabinets above granite countertops Before After

Maple range wall, finished in white

Cabinet refinish, existing hardware

Honey maple against a busy granite made the whole wall feel heavy. White doors let the stone become the pattern in the room. The appliances, backsplash and hardware are all original.

Kitchen after painting: cherry cabinets and island refinished white over tile floor Same kitchen before painting: dark cherry cabinets with a cream island over tile floor Before After

Cherry kitchen and island, painted white

Perimeter cabinets and island

The island had already been painted a different colour than the perimeter, which made a large kitchen feel chopped up. Bringing everything to one white pulled the room back together and made the ceiling read higher.

Bathroom after painting: double vanity refinished in soft cream Same bathroom before painting: dark cherry double vanity Before After

Primary bath vanity, cherry to cream

Double vanity and linen cabinet

Cabinet painting is not only a kitchen job. The same prep and spray process works on a vanity, and it costs a fraction of replacing a run this long. Countertop, sinks and faucets all stayed.

Kitchen peninsula before painting: cherry cabinets with granite bar top and wooden stools
Before
Same kitchen peninsula after painting: cabinets refinished white with the granite bar top kept
After

Kitchen peninsula, cherry to white

Perimeter, peninsula and pantry

A peninsula kitchen with a lot of upper cabinet mass. Going white kept the granite and the acacia floor as the warm elements and stopped the uppers from closing the room in.

Kitchen mid project: sage cabinet doors with unfinished wood frames
Before
Same kitchen finished: cabinets and frames sprayed a single warm white with black hardware
After

Mismatched doors, brought to one finish

Doors, frames and trim

Sage doors hung in raw wood frames, with a beadboard backsplash in a third shade. Spraying the doors, frames and backsplash in one colour turned three finishes into one kitchen.

Kitchen before painting: dark cherry cabinets against teal walls
Before
Same kitchen after painting: white cabinets against soft grey walls
After

Dark cherry and teal, made bright

Cabinets and wall colour

Cherry cabinets on teal walls left almost no light in the room. White cabinets and a soft grey wall kept the tile backsplash and wood floor working without competing with them.

Living room before: red brick fireplace with a dark wood mantel
Before
Same fireplace after: brick painted white with the dark mantel kept and a round mirror above
After

Red brick fireplace, painted white

Masonry, hearth and surround

Brick takes a different prep than cabinetry, but the idea is the same: keep what is solid and change what dates it. The mantel and the black doors stayed, so the brick stopped being the loudest thing in the room.

Kitchen before: cream cabinets with a brown glaze and raised panel doors
Before
Same kitchen after: flat white cabinets with brass bar pulls
After

Glazed cream doors, refinished clean white

Doors, drawer fronts and new hardware

The brown glaze in every profile was the thing dating this kitchen. A flat white finish and brass bar pulls kept the existing boxes, backsplash and quartz and still reads as a new kitchen.
